Motivational interviewing (MI) is a collaborative communication approach designed to help people resolve ambivalence regarding behavior change. Since its effectiveness was first demonstrated in the 1980s, MI has expanded from a treatment modality for individuals with alcohol use disorder to into a widely used, empirically validated method of communication across a broad array of sectors.
